PANS Symptom Rating Scale
The PANS 31-Item Symptom Rating Scale (PANS Rating Scale), developed by Tanya K. Murphy, MD, MS and Gail A. Bernstein, MD, is a tool widely used in clinical practice and research to identify and quantify the severity of symptoms associated with Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS). The scale captures symptom presence and severity over the past week, generating a PANS Total Score that reflects overall symptom burden.
This version has been formatted and adapted for clarity by the PANDAS Physicians Network, with the addition of structured instructions to support consistent use and interpretation. The PANS Total Score may indicate a greater number and/or severity of symptoms but does not capture certain physical findings that are typically assessed through a comprehensive medical evaluation.
This tool is intended for symptom tracking and clinical/research use and is not a substitute for comprehensive medical evaluation.
