Aetna Expands IVIG Coverage for PANS/PANDAS

Aetna has updated its medical policy to include Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS) / Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Streptococcal Infections (PANDAS), allowing coverage when intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) is considered a medically necessary treatment for patients who meet diagnostic and clinical criteria.

This update represents an important step in recognizing the role of immune dysfunction in the onset of neuropsychiatric symptoms and offers more opportunities to provide timely, potentially life-saving treatment.

Careful documentation of disease course, symptomatology, and other listed criteria will remain essential. Clinicians are encouraged to review Aetna’s guidelines on the Aetna website.

By supporting interventions that target the underlying immune processes, we can continue advancing care and improving outcomes for patients and families impacted by these treatable medical conditions.
