In Memoriam
Elizabeth (Betsy) Mellins, MD

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Elizabeth (Betsy) Mellins on March 24th, 2024. Betsy was a pioneer in the field of pediatric immunology at Stanford University, advancing our understanding of autoimmune diseases in children. Dr Mellins’ work on Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS) helped indicate that PANS is an inflammatory disease and provided insights into the disorder and new ideas on how to calm inflammation.

Over her remarkable career, Betsy authored more than 200 peer-reviewed publications, with foundational contributions to the role of Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) class II molecules and its role in the puzzle of inherited risk factors for autoimmune diseases.

Betsy was the driving force behind the creation of the Childhood Arthritis & Rheumatology Research Alliance (CARRA), serving as its inaugural chairperson. Under her guidance, CARRA blossomed into a formidable North American consortium, uniting over 400 pediatric rheumatologists, researchers, and coordinators in a shared mission to discover effective treatments for juvenile arthritis and related autoimmune conditions.

Beyond her scientific contributions, Betsy’s legacy is also in the personal connections she had. As a mentor, she nurtured the careers of countless students, residents, and post-docs, fostering a passion for research and a commitment to excellence. Her ability to inspire and advise made her a cherished figure among her peers and protégés alike.

Betsy’s passing is a great loss to the scientific community and to all who knew her. Her pioneering spirit, compassionate mentorship, and unwavering dedication to improving the lives of children with autoimmune diseases will continue to inspire future generations.

We will miss her dearly.
